Students learn about respect with video conferencing
February 03, 2012
The Global Nomads Group recently deployed video conferencing technology to facilitate the launch of the Teaching Respect for All program, established by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization to increase tolerance, respect and understanding on a global scale. Funded by the U.S. State Department, the program provides comprehensive curriculum for teachers and online platforms students can access to openly discuss cultural differences in an effort to build respectful communities all over the world.
So far, the video conferencing capabilities have connected students in Salvador, Brazil, and Virginia Beach, Virginia, to UNESCO and State Department officials, as well as members of the Brazilian government to start the program.
Bernando Monzani, programs manager for the Global Nomads Group, said the video conferencing technology facilitates person-to-person interaction between young adults all over the world in virtual environments, where students can feel free to learn about new cultures and share their opinions with peers. The high-definition screens, cameras and audio helps mimic in-person dialogue, which enhances the program for participants.
Video conferencing tools also are being used by the Stanford Online High School, which allows academically talented students to take advanced courses in addition to their regular high school classes. The goal of the program is to offer challenging coursework for students who may not have access to higher level classes at their high schools.
